Vientiane is the capital of Laos, and also its largest city. Built on the banks of the Mekong River, Vientiane is right on the border with Thailand. Both the administrative and economic centre of Laos, Vientiane is also its most populous city.
Vientiane is on its way to modernisation.
Since the country opened up in recent years, much of its infrastructure is constantly being upgraded. You will instantly notice the constant building that is going on all the time in the city.
An interesting note for all travellers: the name “Vientiane” reflects the French inability to pronounce Lao. The correct pronunciation of the city’s name is “Viangchan“.
Compared to many other cities, Vientiane isn’t the most attractive or exciting place to be. This is also because the Thais razed it to the grounds in 1827, so much of the cultural relics were lost or looted.
But I am hopeful Vientiane will one day rise from the ashes.
