Every 15th November, Japan celebrates the Shichi-Go-San 七五三 Festival. Shichi-Go-San means ‘Seven-Five-Three’ – it is a rite of passage for girls and boys of 3 years, boys of 5 years and girls of 7 years of age.

Shichi-Go-San 七五三 Festival is a thousand year-old tradition

Plus it is observed yearly. Seriously, this is one for the bucket list.

It is a great opportunity to see children dressed up in traditional clothing, visiting a shrine with the family and receive blessings from the priests. They are mostly happy because they get to be the centre of everyone’s attention, including tourists like me. They really look super cute!

Tokyo’s Meiji Shrine 明治神宮 is one of the most recent shrines in the capital. It was built as a dedication to Emperor Meiji and Empress Shoken.

What I really like about the shrine is its very serene forested surroundings of the Yoyogi Park, right in the centre of one of the largest and most modern cities on earth!
