The JW Marriott Venice Resort & Spa is a 5-star resort located on a private island – the Isola delle Rose – in Venetian lagoon. Here’s why this luxurious paradise is the best way to enjoy northern Italy’s most world-renown heritage site of Venice.
The History of the Isola delle Rose
Located about 20 minutes boat ride from Venice, the Isola delle Rose (Island of Roses) was actually known by a less gracious name tot he Venetians as the “Sacca Sessola” (Scoop Bag). This artificial island was the youngest in the Venetian lagoon, created only in 1860-1870. It was once a hospital for the cholera epidemic of 1911, and the buildings still remain. But since 2015, the JW Marriott Venice Resort & Spa opened after converting the site into a 5-star luxury resort for the rich and famous who want to enjoy Venice, but without the prying eyes of commoners.
What I liked about the JW Marriott Venice Resort & Spa
The privacy of this luxurious resort cannot be understated. Just a short boat ride away from Venice, guests here are treated to a quiet retreat after a visit to the hustle and bustle of Venice itself.
The rooftop infinity pool was my favourite, although it was too cold for my liking during my visit. It offers a grandiose view of the Laguna di Venezia and a panoramic view of Venice itself! Where else could one indulge in such splendid sight of Renaissance Europe’s most cosmopolitan city?
The hotel resort has won various awards since its opening:
- The GOLD LIST 2018 by Condé Nast Traveller as one of the world’s top hotels.
- The Europe Leading Honeymoon Resort 2018 by World Travel Awards.
- Their spa has been awarded the “Country Winner for Italy” by World Luxury Spa Awards 2018.
There are a few restaurants and bars in the resort where you can have your meals, and there is even a cooking school called Sapori where you can learn Italian and Venetian cuisines.
How are the rooms in JW Marriott Venice Resort & Spa?
Many visitors to Venice complain about the noises and lack of space in hotels on Venice itself, even for the 5-star hotels. The JW Marriott Venice Resort & Spa certainly offers a very different and exclusive way to enjoy Venice!
Our room was very quiet, apart from the lulling background sounds of the waves and an occasional squawk of seagulls. This is very rare for anyone visiting Venice. We slept very well in the night and woke up recharged and ready to explore Venice.
The room itself is well equipped and the amenities look very new. For my taste, the old hospital buildings look a bit somber although the architects have certainly done a good job in making the hotel look premium out of the original buildings.
