By Vilain Silver Fox Hair Wax: As a Northeast Asian man, I have been forever on the lookout for good hair products to tame my wild Oriental mane! My search this year landed me in the arms of the incredible brand By Vilain. And this review is my personal experience of their very good product, the By Vilain Silver Fox Hair Wax.
First a bit about By Vilain and their Silver Fox Hair Wax
By Vilain is this very sleek and stylish hair product range founded by the world’s hottest identical twins Emil & Rasmus Vilain Albrechtsen (You must realise by now I am a huge fan of sexy Nordic men). You can see how they look like on the stamp once you order from their store, how cool is that?! Seriously, you need to follow their Youtube channel and ogle at them every night to assure a good night filled with sweet dreams. What’s more impressive is their webshop: Slikhaar Shop and the service they provide: prompt delivery and clear shopping experience. They obviously want to build a community around their products, and that’s what the internet is about and why they have achieved such stellar success.
Silver Fox Hair Wax is the successor of their flagship product the Gold Digger . Both products purportedly have similar hold with the Silver Fox having a bit more shine, especially when applied on wet hair.
What’s so difficult about Male Asian Hair?
Orientals (i.e. Northeast Asians – Japanese, Chinese and Korean) have the thickest hair of all humans and in general, Asian men have even thicker hair than women. This makes male Asian hair extremely difficult to style. Short hair is relatively not pliable, so they stand up. Longer hair falls but is too thick to be styled. Therefore, you need a strong wax that is able to hold everything together and also tame the shorter constantly-erected strands.
But on the plus side, male Asian hair has amazing shine. Duller wax does not hide that healthy glow the hair naturally exudes. Asian men can generally go to European barbers, because like most European hair, male Asian hair is either straight or has large curls, and not frizzy like African or Indian hair.
So does By Vilain Silver Fox Hair Wax suit my Male Asian Hair?
By Vilain Silver Fox Hair Wax comes in a 65ml pot. It is also available in a smaller travel version, which I also bought. The grey wax is extremely strong and does not contain much odour, good or bad.
As you can tell from the photos, I first shampooed my hair, made sure it was well-conditioned and then I blew dry on high heat. Then I applied By Vilain Blow volumizing styling powder to the areas that I wanted to create more lift.
I then proceeded to dry style my hair and then applied a very small fingertip amount of By Vilain Silver Fox Hair Wax. Styling my Male Asian Hair was relatively simple with the Silver Fox Hair Wax, and it does not flatten my hair as some gel or hair wax do.
What I like and dislike about By Vilain Silver Fox Hair Wax
Without blow-drying, it would be difficult for my Male Asian Hair to be styled and even with such a strong hold, By Vilain Silver Fox Hair Wax still cannot do that for me, and I presume for other Oriental men.
That being said, By Vilain Silver Fox Hair Wax is the best hair product in Western Europe that I have seen that works for my Male Asian Hair. Other products are made for finer European hair and rarely have such strong hold. I’m quite surprised such a great product came out of rainy Denmark.
Contrary to what others claim, By Vilain Silver Fox Hair Wax does not hold eight hours straight for me. Also, I still have to use hair spray to keep everything in place. To say that this is entirely the fault of By Vilain Silver Fox Hair Wax is unfair. I live in very very rainy Northwestern Europe – very similar to Denmark – and the high humidity (nearly 90% everyday) does affect the hold duration of water soluble hair wax. Also, like I mentioned, Male Asian Hair is very heavy. Without hair spray, hair wax alone never holds the weight for the whole day.
Conclusion: I like it very much, it doesn’t do 100% like what others claim for Male Asian Hair and much depends on your hair texture and thickness as well as your country’s climate, but for a 6-8 hour hold with hairspray, the By Vilain Silver Fox Hair Wax is my everyday hair wax. Tak, Emil & Rasmus!
hey man, what is the smell like?
Is it somewhat like Toni & Guy Styling Fibre or is it like Sweet Caramel type?
It’s not a strong smell, hard to describe. Certainly not a bad smell.
